Klamath Beach Road Storm Repair
Klamath, CA

Client: Del Norte County
Project Manager: Brian Freeman, P.E.

SHN prepared a preliminary engineering and geotechnical study to repair the Klamath Beach Road. During the previous flood season, ground movement at the bridge-crossing site removed between 7 and 15 feet of the outboard edge of the roadway; thus, making it difficult for traffic to traverse the failed section with a reasonable level of safety. The road is a primary access for California Department of Forestry, the northern portion of Redwoods National Park, Yurok Dance Grounds, and several landowners, as such the County desired installing a temporary bridge (Bailey Bridge) proposed on Klamath Beach Road. SHN assessed the geologic conditions in the immediate vicinity of the proposed bridge crossing, identified competent abutment support material, and designed abutments for the temporary bridge. We provided county staff with findings, conclusions, and recommendations related to geotechnical aspects of the project design and construction.

SHN assessed appropriate, technically feasible, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable approaches for restoring the roadway to pre-disaster function and capacity. Work included conducting an evaluation of environmental constraints, such as the Spotted Owl and other sensitive species that might be impacted by the construction project, and processed the required permits through the various agencies (ACOE, DFG, Coastal Commission), as needed. SHN subsequently recommended repairing the road with a soldier pile retaining wall with concrete lagging, which was approved by FEMA and OES.

SHN designed the retaining structure, prepared technical specifications and the engineer’s cost estimate, provided bidding assistance and project management, provided construction management, and performed duties of the “Engineer of Record” for the Phase 2 of the project.
