Recruitment success but not done yet!

We are pleased to welcome six (6!) professionals to SHN.  Competition for outstanding people is keen, with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting an 8% increase in civil engineering employment to 2024.  Attracting experienced and enthusiastic people in turn attracts more of the same, and SHN is all the better for it.  We are still accepting applications for civil engineers, a surveyor, and a survey technician.  Our most recent staff additions are:  Dale Roper, PE, PLS (Redding), Justin Wilson, PE (Coos Bay), Jennifer Figueroa-Golder (Arcata), Roger Klakken (Eureka), Richard Poole, EIT (Coos Bay), and Gary Slawson (Coos Bay).  Zack Carter will be completing his intership with us, and returning to Oregon State University in September.  To read short bios, please "read more".

Dale Roper, PE, PLS.  Dale is a Senior Civil Engineer, who is a Professional Engineer and a Professional Land Surveyor.  He is no stranger to consulting engineering, having owned his own firm for almost 15 years.  Most recently he was working at another small firm for five years, performing site civil engineering and surveying as part of a nuclear power plant decommissioning.  Dale is another person who has worked at SHN, followed other opportunities, and is now back.  He will be based in our Redding office, but providing his experience to all of the SHN offices.  Dale received his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from San Jose State University, and his Bachelor’s from Humboldt State University.

Justin Wilson, PE.  Justin is also a Senior Civil Engineer, with a background in consulting engineering and construction.  He has worked in North Dakota, Washington, and Oregon, and at SHN his experience will extend into California.  One of his strengths is experienced based on a variety of engineering specialties, including water and wastewater, stormwater management, slope stability, and materials testing.  Justin is active in Rotary International, which has a chapter in the Coos Bay/North Bend area, near to SHN’s Coos Bay office, where Justin will be based.  Justin’s Bachelor’s degree is in Civil Engineering from North Dakota State University.

Jennifer Figueroa-Golder.   Jennifer is a permitting specialist and compliance coordinator, who will be working with us through at least 2017.  She was formerly the Assistant Compliance Coordinator for the City of Fortuna, and before that she worked at the USDA Natural Resources Conservation District in Stockton and Eureka.   She has experience in many aspects of permitting and compliance, including site development permitting, municipal planning, and stormwater compliance documentation.  She will be working at our Arcata office.  Jennifer’s Bachelor’s degree is in rangeland sciences and soils from Humboldt State University.

Roger Klakken.  Roger will be a staff geologist, primarily assisting the Environmental Services group in Eureka.  He and his family have recently moved to Humboldt County.  Prior to his move, Roger worked as a field chemist for an international hazardous materials handling and management company.  He has experience in most aspects of hazardous materials handling, including worker health and safety, hazardous materials handling and shipping, and data collection and management.  Roger’s Bachelor’s degree is in Geology from Portland State University.

Richard Poole, EIT.  Richard is a staff engineer, whose most recent work experience was in New South Wales, Australia, where he performed structural design for retaining walls, drainage structures and pools, and site inspections and assessments.  In the US, his work was based in Klamath Falls, OR and Yreka, CA.  Richard graduated summa cum laude in Civil Engineering from the Oregon Institute of Technology, but prior to that he received his Bachelor’s in Mathematics/Physics from the University of Sydney.  We welcome Richard back to the US and to Coos Bay!

Gary Slawson.  Gary is a surveying technician.  Prior to working at SHN, Gary worked for another small engineering and planning firm, also providing surveying assistance.  Gary enjoys working outdoors, having been a timber cruiser for a Pacific Northwest engineering and forestry firm for many years prior to becoming a survey technician.

Zackary Carter.  Zack is one of SHN’s summer interns, who will be heading back to Oregon State University in September.  He is studying engineering, and has spent most of the summer working with our Coos Bay surveying crew.  We hope that his internship has increased his enthusiasm for engineering!  Please keep in touch with SHN, Zack.
