With new PE licenses comes great responsibility

Congratulations to Cody Long and Dawnly Yang, who are now licensed, California Professional Civil Engineers.  Licensing exams are rigorous; the 2015 pass rate for the 8-hour “Principles and Practices” test was only 44%.   The pass rates for the other two additional exams, in surveying and seismic principles, were 51% and 41%, respectively.  Cody and Dawn studied numerous hours on weekends and after work to prepare for and successfully pass these three exams.

Civil engineers are licensed by states in the US because our work greatly affects public and environmental health and safety.  An engineer’s professional stamp and signature certifies that the engineer is taking professional responsibility for a project’s design; the project could be a bridge, a drinking water system, an environmental remediation clean-up, and many other types of work.

Professional responsibility is a serious business.  While licensing entails great responsibility, SHN provides proper training, oversight, review, and quality control, so SHN engineers cheerfully shoulder this burden.  With Dawn and Cody passing their exams, the percentage of SHN’s engineers who are licensed increases to 82%.
