Martin Slough Wastewater Interceptor Design and

Right of Way Surveys

Project Features:

This multi-discipline project includes the design surveys and on-going right of way engineering surveys for a 9-mile long multi-branch pipeline.  SHN’s survey team preformed the control, base mapping, and boundary surveys, including surveys to locate nearly 100 existing parcels or rights of way.  SHN’s Surveyors prepared right-of-way acquisition diagrams, calculations, and descriptions for permanent and temporary easements over more than 60 private parcels.

Sanitary Sewer Outfall Project; City of Port Orford, OR

Project Features:

This project involved the construction of improvements to an existing waste-water treatment facility, and construction of an effluent disposal pipeline, ocean outfall, and diffuser system for the discharge of treated effluent to a disposal point 2,200 feet offshore.  Working in conjunction with SHN’s Coos Bay office, SHN surveyors performed boundary surveys of the parcels along the route of the disposal pipeline

and assisted in the preparation of easement documents for those properties under which the pipeline passed.  During the design phase of the project, survey control was established for aerial mapping of the site, with detailed topographic mapping being done of the existing waste-water treatment plant and at the launch site of the directional drill used for the ocean outfall.  SHN surveyors were also responsible for the staking of the disposal pipeline and the improvements at the treatment plant during the construction phase of the project.

Behavioral and Social Sciences Building Design and Construction Surveys;  Forbes Physical Education Complex Design Surveys, Humboldt State University; Arcata, CA

Social Sciences Building

Project Features:

                   Forbes Physical Education Complex

SHN’s Surveyors prepared the highly detailed CAD base maps required for design of these $74 million university facilities and related site improvements. Worked with university staff to map the complex utility network and to prepare CAD drawings to HSU standards. Provided construction surveys for the 5-story Behavioral and Social Sciences Building.

JH Ranch, Scott Valley; Siskiyou County, CA

Project Features:

This ongoing project is located on the 650-acre JH Ranch property along French Creek in the Siskiyou Mountains ten miles south of Etna.  Work has involved the development of a site plan for the ranch, with emphasis placed on locating existing structures and infrastructure elements.  Survey control for aerial mapping of the site was established utilizing GPS equipment, with detailed topographic mapping being done of areas slated for new road, bridge, and housing construction.  Hydrologic cross-sectional data was collected along French Creek, Paynes Lake Creek, and Horse Range Creek in order to determine F.E.M.A. flood-plain elevations associated with each creek.  Construction staking for a new access road and bridge over French Creek was completed in early 2007.  SHN surveyors have also completed boundary surveys on a portion of the ranch property.

Ridgewood Ranch Conservation Easement; Willits, CA

Project Features:

SHN is working with the Golden Rule Church Association and various conservation agencies to provide surveying and mapping services for the Ridgewood Ranch Conservation Area.

The goal of the Ridgewood Ranch Conservation Area is to permanently conserve 4,636 acres of the historic home of the legendary racehorse Seabiscuit, including its historic buildings, steelhead creeks, oak woodlands, redwood groves, and wildlife habitat.  The property’s productive forest and farmland will also be conserved, enabling, the Golden Rule Church Association to continue its excellent stewardship, while ensuring its economic sustainability.

Through an innovative use of aerial photography, GPS and conventional survey techniques, SHN is surveying, mapping and creating conservation easement descriptions for all or part of:

  • 5 miles of fish bearing creeks; 16.5 miles of Class II watercourses: 41 miles of Class III  watercourses: 521 acres of associated riparian area
  • Rare vernal pools
  • 2,250 acres of oak woodlands
  • 90 acres of prime farmland and 600 acres of grazing land
  • Wildlife habitat for 187 species including listed species and “species of special concern:” steelhead, osprey, golden eagle, and peregrine falcon.
  • 900 acres of sustainably-managed forest
  • 2 acres of old growth and 17 acres of mature second growth redwood

Old Arcata Road Design and Right of Way Surveys;

Humboldt County, CA

Project Features:

SHN’s Survey team assisted URS Greiner and the County of Humboldt on the County’s Myrtle Avenue/Old Arcata Road re-construction and widening project.  SHN performed control, right of way, and boundary surveys for this 3.5-mile long project.  GPS, conventional, and aerial surveys were used to develop a metric base map on NAD83 basis.  In a joint effort with the Humboldt County Surveyor, a Record of Survey documenting the existing and proposed rights of way and related monumentation was prepared.  Right of way resolution for this 150-year old road was complicated by conflicting right of way descriptions and nearly non-existent monumentation of the right-of-way.

Belcastro Parcel Map; Weed, CA

Project Features:

This project involved the division of an 80-acre parcel of land in the City of Weed.  SHN surveyors completed a complex boundary survey, utilizing GPS and traditional surveying methods that encompassed over a section of land (640 acres).  More than forty deed, map, and other boundary-related documents were used to resolve the property boundary.  The final stage of the project was completing and recording the parcel map to create the land division.

Sanitary Sewer Construction; City of Harbor, OR

Project Features:

This project involved the construction of a new sewage pump station and 2,500 feet of sewer line tying the Harbor Sanitary District into the City of Brookings sewage-disposal system.  A unique aspect of the project was the use of directional drilling for the pipeline crossing under the Chetco River.  Working in conjunction with the Coos Bay office, SHN surveyors prepared detailed topographic mapping along the route of the new line, and did boundary surveys of the parcels under which the pipeline passed.  Construction staking for the new pipeline provided the final phase of survey-related work on the project.
